What counts as a decline violation

A declined payment is logged against your card when it fails for one of these reasons:

  • 01
Insufficient balanceyour card doesn't have enough funds to cover the payment.
  • 02
Merchant never completed the chargethe payment was approved on our end, but the merchant didn't finalize it, so the hold was released back to your card.
  • 03
Card was frozena payment was attempted while the card was frozen.

Each of these adds one strike to your card. The first is always free — from the second onward, a fee applies, and a third strike closes the card.

§3

Strike schedule

Strike 1
No charge

Logged, no fee, card stays active.

Strike 2
$0.75 charged

Fee is deducted, card remains active.

Strike 3
$0.75 · Card closed

Fee is deducted and the card is permanently closed.

Fees are deducted straight from your balance and appear in your account history as "Decline fee."
§4

Card closure

A card is closed automatically in either case:

  • A
Third strike reachedthe card closes right after the third-strike fee is deducted.
  • B
Fee deduction leaves your balance negativethe card closes immediately.
Once a card is closed for repeated declines, you'll need to issue a new one. Standard issuance fees apply ($1.00 for a Virtual Card).
§5

Avoiding strikes

  • Top up your card before you use it, so payments don't fail for lack of balance.
  • Unfreeze your card before trying to pay with it — a frozen card will always decline.
  • Check your strike count from your account page before it gets close to the limit.
Fees above vary by card type and country and may be updated from time to time. Disputes on any fee or transaction must be raised with support within 14 days of the transaction date.
